Patrick Swayze was born on the 18th of August 1962. I think my childhood and specially my teens wouldn’t have been the same without his films. Some of his films have marked me. I remember seeing Dirty Dancing at the cinemas in 1988. 1988. I mean, I was maybe eight, quite possibly still seven, did not understand much of the film except for there was a lot of dancing, romancing and a really emotional, moving ending scene (“nobody puts baby in the corner”). Somehow someone gave us the movie on VHS and we watched it like every other day. The tape was kind of crappy, our video player second hand at its best but still we would sit through the movie with endless stops and white snow just to see the ending. The Outsiders was another movie that marked me profoundly. I had read the book and cried endless tears while reading it, watching it later on a movie was heartbreaking. Later when we still hoped life could be like summer on the beach, we were devoted to Point Break, catching the perfect wave and doing what you love (“If you want the ultimate, you’ve got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It’s not tragic to die doing what you love.”)

Thanks for the memories and for making me believe that the perfect man exist. Happy birthday Patrick Swayze, wherever you are.

Heute am 18. August hätte Patrick Swayze Geburtstag gefeiert. Ihm verdanke ich sehr emotionale Kindheits- und Jugenderinnerungen. Dirty Dancing habe ich 1988 im Kino gesehen. 1988! Da war ich gerade mal acht, vielleicht sogar noch sieben. Und wir hatten die Tochter von Freunden von unseren Eltern so lange genervt, bis sie uns mit ins Kino nahm. Natürlich haben wir wenig verstanden, außer dass es diesen tollen Typen gab, der super tanzen konnte und zum Schluß auf der Bühne stand (“denn ich lasse mir nichts verbieten”). Irgendjemand schenkte uns später auch die Videocassette. Weder unser alter Videorecorder, noch etliche Störungen, Ameisenkriege oder “Kinder das ist doch nichts für Euch” konnten uns davon abhalten, den Film wieder und wieder zu sehen. The Outsiders war ein weiterer Film von ihm, der mich schwer beeindruckt hat. Auweia, was ich dabei geheult. Gefährliche Brandung ermunterte uns in unserem Glauben, das Leben könnte wirklich ein Sommer am Strand sein, immer der perfekten Welle hinterher und nur das zu machen, was man liebt.
