With all the footy going on we might have forgotten, but today, on June 20th, is the UN World Refugee Day. German artist Hermann Josef Hack, also part of the ETF! exhibition, installed together with students from the Cosmopolitan School Berlin several refugee tents made out of his works at the Platz der Republik, Berlin. I went to see it and talk to him. A very nice and inspiring artist.

Hack has been drawing on tarpaulin since many years. With his World Climate Refugee Camp he draws attention to the social consequences of the climate catastrophe.

“As an artist I can only offer to refugees my most valuable thing: my work. I build tents with it, on this occasion in front of the Reichstag in Berlin, before sending them to a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, where I will be working afterwards with the refugees. I call upon our members of the Bundestag to taken in more refugees.”

The implementation of the project is being done with CARE Deutschland – Luxemburg.

Mit der ganzen WM haben wir es vielleicht vergessen, aber heute, am 20. Juni, ist UN-Weltflüchtlingstag. Der Künstler Hermann Josef Hack, der auch bei ZNE! dabei ist, hat auf dem Platz der Republik vor dem Reichstag gemeinsam mit Schülerinnen und Schülern der Cosmopolitan School Berlin mehrere Flüchtlingszelte aus seinen Gemälden errichtet. Ich bin vorbeigekommen, um das zu sehen und mit ihm zu reden. Eine sehr interessante und angenehme Person.

Hack malt seit Jahrzehnten Bilder auf Zeltplanen. Mit seinem World Climate Refugee Camp macht er weltweit auf die sozialen Folgen der Klimakatastrophe aufmerksam. Mit Flüchtlingskindern auf Sri Lanka arbeitete er an einem Malbuch, das anschließend in deutschen Schulen den gleichaltrigen Kindern die Nöte der Katastrophenopfer nahe brachte.

„Als Künstler kann ich nur mein Wertvollstes den Flüchtlingen anbieten: meine Bilder. Ich baue sie zu Zelten um, symbolisch hier vor dem Reichstag, bevor ich sie in ein syrisches Flüchtlingslager in Jordanien sende, wo ich anschließend mit den Flüchtlingen arbeiten werde. Unsere Bundestagsabgeordneten rufe ich auf, endlich mehr Flüchtlinge in Deutschland aufzunehmen“, so Hack.

Die Umsetzung des Projektes erfolgt in Zusammenarbeit mit CARE Deutschland-Luxemburg.
