What is a Litfaßsäule? – Was ist eine Litfaßsäule?

Litfaßsäule

The Litfaßsäule was invented in Berlin in 1854 by Ernst Litfaß in order to structure and organise “the unsystematic posting of pamphlets, notices and other materials on walls, doors, fences and trees”. The first Litfaßsäule was installed in Münzstraße, at the very same spot where you can find today the monument dedicated to him, which is just in front of my office. Soon Litfaßsäulen were installed all over Berlin and other German cities.

He was called the king of publicity. The “unsystematic posting of pamphlets, notices and other materials on walls, doors, fences and trees” can be still found everywhere in Berlin. Despite a lot of Litfaßsäulen. Apparently there are still 67.000 all over Germany and 50.000 are used to announce cultural activities. Wouldn’t it be great to have a project announced on it? Going on my bucket list.
