Kraftwerk Berlin

kraftwerk

Last Tuesday I was lucky to visit the Kraftwerk Berlin in Kreuzberg. The generation station was built in 1961 and the gigantic complex fed all Ost Berlin with electricity and ran until 1997. The building was abandoned for a long time until Dimitri Hegemann, an important cultural personality in Berlin life, moved in 2006 with his club Tresor there. Tresor opened in 1991 in the strongroom of the former department store Wertheim which was known to be the most beautiful of its kind in Germany. Besides hosting the Tresor the Kraftwerk Berlin offers conferences, concerts and exhibition. It’s an amazing, strangely beautiful place.

On a personal note, I went to the Tresor in Leipziger Straße before it closed. I remember losing my contact lenses (with – 7.5 this is a drama) and stumbling around looking for my friends, which proved to be hard among all the old safe deposit boxes, bars and the fog. Once I found them we had a great night though.
