Today in the News – Heute im Tagesspiegel

mauer muss weichen

Yesterday it was announced on the radio and spread through new social media, today it is on the papers. They have begun to tear ca. 25m of the East Side Gallery down in order to make space for a safe exit and the connection to a bridge that needs to be built (official version) and for a new building with 60 luxury flats that will be constructed on the former death strip (non official version). It has all happened very fast and some Berliners are not too happy. The East Side Gallery is 1.3 km long section of the Berlin Wall and consists of more than 100 paintings, many damaged by graffiti and vandalism ( “I was here”) and some are now being taken away. Wonder where they will take them.

I like the East Side Gallery as a nice stop for a sundowner Berliner Kindl after a long cycling tour through Berlin. I even remember when there was no fancy green but just sand and rocks and in summer a group of people would improvise a very basic beach bar. On a completely different note, I also think it’s the less respected cycling lane in Berlin.

Update: Activists stopped the construction works.
